La Porte INdiana

The city is home to many festivals and community-planned activities. Events like Fitness Friday, the Farmers Market, Saturdays in the Sun, the Sunflower Fair and the Taste of La Porte all come together to make it a great place to visit and play.

La Porte Civic Auditorium is a highlight of the City. The auditorium has hosted thousands of regional and community events including everything from athletic contests to organizational conferences, trade shows, family weddings, charitable concerts, and stage plays.

Pioneerland is located at the La Porte County Fairgrounds. Since it's beginning, Pioneerland has grown to include a log cabin, blacksmith shop, antique post and beam barn, one room schoolhouse, post office, general store, farm bureau cabin, pioneer heritage garden, outdoor kitchen, quilter's cabin, artisan barn and wash house to depict the 1800-1840's time period. It's in full operation during the summer's La Porte County Fair and for school tours.

Hesston Steam Museum is fun for all ages, but not your average museum with glass cases. The location offers three different railroads and trains for your family to ride and enjoy. Outdoor Activities

Residents from La Porte and surrounding communities enjoy the modern facilities of Kesling Park. Located on the southern edge of the city, it started with a small 2-acre land donation and has since grown through additional donations to the present day size of 90 acres. Kesling Park offers four baseball fields, six tennis courts, a walking and nature trail, soccer fields, sledding hill and picnic shelters. The park also contains Fort La Play Porte, a large community-built playground.

La Porte offers many water sport opportunities between it's two recreational lakes. Of them Pine Lake is the largest and has the most opportunities available to the general public. Pine Lake's 543 surface acres provide plenty of room for water-skiing, sailing and wake-boarding. A public boat ramp is located on Stone Lake, the other La Porte lake used for recreational purposes. Both Pine Lake and Stone Lake offer plenty of fishing to keep anglers happy. Some bank fishing is available, and the number of boat ramps means nearly everyone can access the water for free or for a nominal fee. The crystal clear waters make canoeing and kayaking especially enjoyable. If neither inland lake is enough for you, the town of New Buffalo with access to magnificent Lake Michigan is a mere 25 minute drive away.

When it comes to dining, La Porte offers a wide range of establishments to choose from. For a lunch or dinner meal, the Cali-Mex cuisine at Mucho Mas is sure to hit the spot. T-Bones Pier 11 specializes in steaks and seafood with a taste of Southern France and Italy.

Heston Supper Club's reputation is built on outstanding food, generous portions and friendly service in a comfortable casual fine dining atmosphere. Award-winning slow roasted prime rib is the house specialty, with cuts up to 40 ounces. The menu features sauteed lake perch and Canadian walleye, hand cut steaks and chops, barbecued ribs and a wide variety of seafood.

The Nightlife

When it comes to spirits and nightlife, La Porte does not disappoint. Backroad Brewery produces mostly ales but will do lagers in cooler months. The beers are unique in that they aren't filtered but are matured and conditioned. The brewery packages all beer in-house and is self distributed in Indiana only.
JJ's Side Out Bar and Grill has a full family friendly menu and the largest beer selection in the area. With pool, darts, volleyball, cornhole and a weekend DJ, JJ's is a must-hangout.

La Porte has four major highways; U.S. 35, Indiana 2, Indiana 39, and Indiana 4 going through it and is located in close proximity to I-80/90 and I-94. The city is only an hour drive from the Chicago Loop making it an excellent location for a quick weekend getaway or an extended stay.
